How Art Can Be A Form Of Worship

When we talk about worship it’s really easy to instantly think only about singing, making music and reading the Bible. Whilst these are all fantastic ways to worship and grow closer to God, I think sometimes we forget that these aren’t the only ways. To me, worshipping God can include using your gifts and talents to glorify Him, however that may look. For those of us who create, this may be through a more visual means, rather than solely relying on words.

God As The Creator

Have you ever thought that you might be drawn to create because you are made in the image of God, who created the whole Earth and everything in it? The Bible starts with these well known words ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.’ (Genesis 1:1). When we paint, draw or create we are reflecting the creativity of our Heavenly Father!

Sharing Your Faith Through Art

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. Of course this isn’t always the case, but sometimes you may find it easier to ‘talk’ through creating something visual and in turn, the people who get to see that work can interpret it in their own way. This allows you to bless others through your creativity, especially if your work is rooted in spreading God’s Word. Whilst I hope that my work may bless and inspire others, I have also found the process of creating to be an incredible chance to sit quietly and contemplate the verse that I have been inspired by. In this way, I am worshipping, simply in a quiet way.

Following God’s Lead

When I launched Grace & Greene, my Dad shared this Bible verse with me: ‘Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.’ (1 Peter 4:10). I find this verse so inspiring and am comforted by the thought that God is behind all that I create when I paint with Him at the heart.

Using Art To Share The Word With Everyone

Not everyone will stop long enough to listen to a sermon, however they may enjoy looking at a painting or a piece of art. This can make the Bible a lot more accessible and exciting to those that may not have much experience with it. It can also act as a non-intimidating conversation starter, whether you share the Bible through an art print, a greetings card or a simple sticker.

Many Ways To Worship

If you’re an artist, designer, writer or a creative in any way, know that your work has value. Even if your pursuit is a quiet one, completed in solitude away from congregations and crowds, your creativity is a gift. When you use it for God’s glory and to share His word, you are without a doubt, worshipping and praising Him.

I’d love to hear how you use your creativity as an act of worship, let me know on Instagram or Facebook x
